Colposcopy
If you have had an abnormal smear result, our Consultant Gynaecologist, Mr Leitch will take the time to discuss the findings with you and also discuss what the next course of action should be. If a colposcopy examination is required, this may be performed at the same visit.
A Colposcopy is a simple procedure performed to examine the cervix (neck of the womb). This is a simple, painless procedure and takes approximately 10 minutes. The Consultant Gynaecologist will explain the procedure to you beforehand.
A speculum is passed into the vagina and the consultant then visualises the cervix using a special microscope (the Colposcope) whilst "painting" the cervix with a special vinegar-type solution using a small cotton bud. Any abnormal cells will then be stained white. If necessary, a small biopsy of this area may be taken at the same time.
The Consultant will discuss the fndings with you immediately. If a biopsy has been performed, the results usually take approximately 2-3 days.
Mr Leitch is a fully accredited colposcopist and a member of The British Society of Colposcopy and Cervical Pathology.
